My Response to Candice's Daily Mail Article

'I didn't even know about this Belle Gibson lady,' she said. 'I don't know whether she did have cancer or what.'

Well, you have had two weeks now to find out who she is and what she did.  It is no longer an excuse that you did not know.  Go look it up.

'All I know is, she's not me, I'm not her. My story is so far removed from anybody else's story because it's mine. It's unique, and it's exactly how it happened. So why am I not allowed to share that?'

You can share anything you want.  Neither I nor anyone else can stop you.  What we can do is be critical of you and your claims.  I have zero ability to stop you from writing something and putting it up on the internet.  I have no idea how you got something so ridiculous into your head.

'Why am I not allowed to help people heal? I'm not making money out of this, I'm not trying to hurt anyone.'

You’re not a doctor and you  have zero qualifications to “help people heal”.  I believe you that you are not currently making money off this, but it seems fairly obvious that is your goal.  You may not be trying to hurt anyone, but that does not mean that you aren’t hurting people.  If people follow your lead and ditch real medical care for the magical pineapple diet, then you’re hurting people.

'I'm not a fraud and I'm not a fake'.

Actually I believe you.  I think you are quite sincere.  You sincerely believe that this diet will help people.  What I do not believe is that you are being completely truthful.  Now, it seems fairly clear to me that you had and have a very limited understanding of what was happening when you were getting treatment for your cancer, so perhaps that is where all your misunderstanding stems from.

'It just seems they've got this massive agenda to break down my story.'

Yep.

'I know I can sleep at night and in my heart I am doing what I know to be right.'

Three indicators of deception in that one sentence alone.

'I haven't changed anything, I haven't deleted anything.'

Yes you did. The deleted content is here on this blog, and I have more of it I can post at any time.

'It really did change the way I f***ing lived'.

I believe that.  I do not think anyone doubted that.

Of note in this entire article is that Candice-Marie Fox chooses not to correct the serious issues the previous article got wrong.  She does not once say here that she never had stage 4 cancer, cancer in her liver, or that Mark Simon is not an oncologist.  She has the perfect forum to make these critical corrections, and of course she does not do so.

Finally, is she going to post her medical records, or will it be a report (on advice of counsel), because at this point I am very, very confused as to what her actual promise is.

  1. But Houghton Regis is in Bedfordshire. For God's sake, Violet, it's the top item on the Healthycandy.me page, and you didn't even mention it. Who says Candice-Marie Fox doesn't correct the important stuff? You all keep whining about unimportant things like medical records and stages of cancer and whether Mark Simon is an oncologist, and you ignore important things like geography. And whether she ditched her ex-husband or not.

    1. I am sure there are more comments that just have not been published yet (DM seems to do that a lot). At least the DM took one quote of mine from here (which was a straightforward one). However, the journalist never contacted me. But, then again, I would way rather they get quotes from actual doctors and oncologists.

Maybe not a lot of people read the article, but at least the word is getting out there that these "wellness" people are no longer getting a free pass. They are going to have to answer some very key questions before they get to spread their nonsense.

Really glad she said this because people have direct evidence here that she most definitely has, definitive evidence of her constant lying.

If anyone does try to google Candice-Marie Fox, there are no links to her FB page or anything that will lead to people finding her, just the bogus original pineapple cured my cancer crap news articles.

  4. This "agenda" business. Do you think Candice understands what it means? Even on the basis of this Daily Mail article alone, what she is doing is revealing her agenda. The podcast revealed her agenda, in her own words, over and over and over. The countdown at healthycandy.me reveals her agenda. She won't shut up about her agenda.

An agenda is not intrinsically bad. An agenda, in the sense she's using the word, is an action or a series of actions based on a strong desire to achieve a certain goal. Our goal is to stop Candice and others like her from perpetuating falsehoods about curing cancer. That's it.

  5. 'Why am I not allowed to help people heal?' Uh because you don't know what you are doing. What makes you think anyone needs your 'help' anyway? You already got the help you needed from appropriate medical care, why shouldn't other people? Anyone dim enough to listen to you is doomed anyway by virtue of the fact they give any of you vacuous ramblings any credibility. 6. Violet, Auma and Ella, what champions!

Thank you for the time and effort you ladies have dedicated to exposing the inaccurate and possibly dangerous information these wellness bloggers think it's their right of passage to share. It's not, unless it's on personal social media and private.

I have enjoyed my coffee time (orally) and read each blog entry and comment but have not had the need to comment myself as others have articulated what I have thought and would have said.

However, there is something that is really bugging me. Before I was diagnosed I was rarely sick and had little knowledge of the medical system here in Australia, other than popping out 4 kids with little difficulty ( sort of, maybe I've just forgotten). 2 yrs ago my life changed and I was diagnosed with an aggressive stage 3 BC. I have nothing but praise for the Australian medical system and from my initial scan, to diagnosis, treatment and prognosis, I have had nothing but compassion, professionalism and excellent follow through. Ok, I am in a major city and Candice was in a remote town in WA but from what I understand she moved to Perth which is a large city for treatment. I don't buy that the doctors she referred to could get it so wrong, so many times. At no point ever did any of my radiographers, assistant registrars or people walking around the hospital ever give me a result or prognosis and you can be sure that I asked...continually! This always came from my Oncologist or Surgeon.

I think there are cases when doctors have a bad bed side manner and when things go haywire with appointments, testing and follow through. It it makes me angry that Candice has not shown any appreciation for the conventional doctors that from all accounts did treat her to being cancer free or close to it. She says in the latest Daily Mail article that she hasn't cured herself but I. The same breath, she says that someone helped her save her own life. I'm confused.

She gives the pseudo Oncologist and his pseudo institute NORI and its pseudo scientific findings the credit for saving her ( and of course, pineapples) What about our dedicated Australian Doctors and Government that would have provided her treatment, including surgery and RAI. Maybe I just didn't get it.!

  7. Hi Violet,

I admire your tenacity. I think the way you, Ella and Auma have approached this is amazing. And you're always so polite.

Just out of interest, I had a look at CFM's healthy candy Facebook page and noted the comments under the top story. The last 2 comments are by a Debra Van Dyke and Susan Boswell. I was interested in whether these 2 were 'nutritionists' as well (as many of her friends seem to be). However, when I click on these names they just link straight back to CFM's page. You'd know much more than I do about online stuff (I'm not even on FB), so do you know what this means? I suspected they were fake comments/profiles generated by the pineapple practitioner herself, especially as they came in within a minute of each other. Or am I too cynical?

Also, when I clicked through to the DM article, I was a bit heartened to read the only comment and the arrows were not supportive of CFM's fantasy-based cure. That must be some sort of satisfaction for you.

    1. No, I am overly cynical. There has been some setting change on the Facebook page and all the commenters now link back to CFM's page. I guess I just didn't believe that so many people would support such obvious nonsense.

    2. She has an interview on the Chris Beat Cancer site, so it getting some undiscerning support from those folks. Not surprising that Chris Wark sells a story of "beating" cancer without conventional treatment when in fact he had stage 3 colon cancer and was treated with surgery, which in itself can be a cure.

    3. That is why these people are SO dangerous. They make it sound like they used woo only to cure themselves. It is horrifying to me that a person with cancer, in their desperation, might give up conventional medicine and emulate one of these people. However, we are not worthy of even being debated at this point. They just label us "trolls" in order to get out of any true accountability. Jess Ainscough did the same, but she called detractors "bullies" instead. If you question these people they simply start with the name-calling and refuse to answer any further. I wonder if Jess would be alive right now if she had actually listened to what her detractors had to say.

  10. Seriously, looking at the NORI web page - on the NORI protocol page there is a total of 2 references for his claims - one is an article written fourteen years ago about methionine restriction in the diet, that confirms there's no evidence yet of any efficacy, and the second is what appears to be a 5 year old literature review by possibly a student on high selenium diets ( no peer review, still no proof of efficacy) Plenty enough to enchant the layperson - but devoid of any "scientific study" that Candice claims Mark SImon has done to prove his protocols work.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Actually the selenium one is a PhD thesis from the karolinska institute in stockholm. I know the format because I was a postdoc in biology in sweden. But the results in the papers were all from cell culture. Lots of stuff works in cell culture but fails at the whole organism level.

    2. That NORI page says "Studies have shown that selenium not only can prevent cancer but can also treat it." but the SELECT study showed "Men taking selenium alone, or vitamin E and selenium, were also more likely to develop prostate cancer than men taking placebo, but those increases were smaller and are not statistically significant" so it may increase prostate cancer, and Vitamin E was shown to increase prostate cancer. Also "There are no clinical trials that show a benefit from taking vitamin E or selenium to reduce the risk of prostate cancer or any other cancer or heart disease"

  11. Posted a fair question on Ms Fox's Facebook but think it got deleted. Here it is for prosperity's sake...

The thing I find confusing is that you clarified in a post on 7th April that you had scans following your thyroid surgery and again after the RAI. You state that both scans showed the same spread of your cancer. Then months later your cancer marker tests are in a very good range. Why do you continue to imply that your diet was the driving factor behind this drop in your cancer marker when this drop is what would be expected from the RAI therapy? I acknowledged what you have said and how you have interpreted what your various doctors have told you initially, however considering you mention how you think it is important it is to be aware of the research and information regarding cancer, why have you not searched the many online resources that talk about the effectiveness and total time course it takes for RAI to work?

It is great that you have made good nutritional choices which I am sure will benefit your overall health. However your means of communication and associating your diet with having controlled your cancer is misleading at best and dangerous at worst.

I started listening to her interview with Chris Wark, but within seconds I felt like I wanted to surgically remove my own ears. I've rarely come across such a rare combination of simplemindedness and nevershuttingupedness. It would be funny if it wasn't so insulting.

"Why don't you get a real job, a real profile, and a real life, you sad sad individual! I really hope they are paying you good wages for the amount of time and effort you're putting in! Projecting this much evil into the world will be deteriorating your health for sure! Good luck with that."

I replied that, as I had explained earlier, I was unable to work due to illness, and she said:

      "You are not fooling anyone!!!"

Candice can simply not wrap her head around the good and ethical reasons why a person my not wish to post on facebook or the internet under their real name. The reason we upset her so much is because she was unable to answer our questions. She was not expecting any sort of challenge; she was expecting only syrupy praise. Now that she has dismissed us as "trolls", she is no longer required to answer our questions. All these wellness people are alike in this arena. They talk like they have the meaning of life all worked out, but they instantly dissolve into pure childishness the moment anyone expects them to be mature adults and take what they are doing seriously.

Oh, and why is she telling people to get a job? I thought her "thing" was about being "free" and not having a job? Or is that just for her?

    Hello,

You have an upcoming discussion with Candice Marie Fox on Weekend Today show. Please be aware that her thyroid cancer story is not true and she is building a business based on false claims that she healed her own cancer with alternative methods.

    1) She could have only been stage I or stage II with almost 100% cure rate and she had standard treatment (surgery and radioactive iodine treatment) that worked in the expected way.
    2) She is misrepresenting her diagnosis, claiming to have been terminal. This is a lie.
    3) She is misleading other vulnerable cancer patients down the path of quackery and threatening their health.

In the context of Belle Gibson and Jessica Ainscough (which you must have heard about unless you live under a rock) both having built a business on promotion of dangerous quackery and being aided by irresponsible journalists, please exercise due diligence and professional journalism.

I am a thyroid cancer survivor myself and I analyzed her story here: http://realitybasedmedicine.blogspot.com/2015/04/a-thyroid-cancer-survivor-questions.html based on Candice's own words.

      http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=192908

The point of the article was specifically highlighting deficiencies in the US system of health care. The sources that provide the basis for the figure of 225 000 deaths per year are from 3 papers published between 1992-1998. And in the case of the contribution to these deaths by 'unnecessary surgery' based on a US Congressional Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce from 1974. Yep, the data is now over 4 decades old. The author, Barbera Starfield, despite highlighting deficiencies in the system seemed to be a still big advocate of the strengths of primary health care. She continued to publish (in peer-reviewed journals) promoting an evidence based approach. The figures sound horrific but didnt seem to push her away from medicine, but motivate her to make it better.

Even if the modern day figures were similar (data that is very hard to collect accurately) you need to have some idea of how many of these people would die without therapy and also compare it to the number of lives saved overall.

Is she serious? What the? This highlights her complete lack of cancer knowledge. It's very disturbing. Does she seriously not understand how effective chemotherapy is, especially for many childhood cancers? If mothers miss those 'lumps' on their children or delay in taking their child to a medical specialist (by that I mean an actual medical doctor) they risk losing their child to this disease. As in death. There's no second chance here.

It appears that CMF is suggesting that mothers feed their children green smoothies instead of seeking immediate, life saving medical intervention. What a fool, and a dangerous fool at that. I'm standing on the sidelines a bit watching this all unfold, as I'm sure are many others. I'm hoping Candice will shut her site down and disappear really soon.

I for one won't be going away until she does. As a mother, I feel compassion and a duty of care for all children, not just my own, so if anyone is going to listen to CMF then it's my duty to warn them.
